How to play tennis. An in depth guide on how to play every tennis stroke in the book. Over 50 parts/chapters and 1000 plus hi speed sequence images of the world's best ever tennis players, turned into tennis stroke animations.
Tennis Books will never be the same.
.

In 1988 I was contracted to do a tennis book by Alan Samson at MacDonald Publishers. Mine was just one book in a series of instructional sports books, entitled 'See How To Play.... (Tennis, Golf, etc.)'. I delivered my text and photos (from which the publisher produced line drawings) and proof read the resulting page mock-ups.
I'm not entirely sure what happened next, but I believe the publishing house (and the back catalogue) was sold and the 'See How To....' series became surplus to requirements: it was pulled by the new owners before it hit the book shops.
Owing to the straight-jacket imposed by the series format, I wasn't unduly concerned that my first tennis book hadn't made it into print.
But this first attempt confirmed what I knew from my instructional articles in tennis magazines: that a technical tennis spectacular was possible.

Whenever I had the funds, I continued to add to my useful archive of high speed sequence photos of the world's best players, predominantly from Miami and the French Open (my favourite tournament) and I made a start on my own tennis book.
A
number of publishers showed interest in my proposals. But the production costs of a full colour tennis book with hundreds of pages were restrictive and I wouldn't settle for black and white. This, and other reasons, prevented my ideas from becoming reality.

The digital age rekindled my passion for the big tennis idea and I decided to make one last effort to complete the tennis book that I've always had in me. When work on these tennis pages seemed endless (it has taken well over a year), I recalled the times when I would visit 200 schools a year to give free demonstrations, and felt privileged to be doing so.
I also drew on the years of enjoyment and purpose I got from tennis, and the extended tennis family that grew over the years, as I traipsed around schools and leaky indoor sports halls, with a bus ticket, a bag full of rackets and a heart filled with determination.
I also remembered the shoe-string budget I was always on when I covered tennis tournaments, and more than once I've skipped lunch and dinner to afford a few more rolls of film to shoot my precious hi-speed sequences

Back in my day as a coach, I once told a former Wimbledon umpire, who was working in sports development for Salford Council, that I would love to take tennis into places like Manchester's Moss Side. He looked at me in horror and disbelief.
'That would be a labour of love' was his response.
A lesser love, for sure. But for me tennis was always a labour of love.
And this is book is the fruit of that labour.

Every word, image, animation, enhancement and page in this animated tennis book is my own work.
Hopefully, the passion for a past love still enlivens the sentences, and the years of studying the technique of the world's best tennis players will translate into readable text.
I hope this tennis book will stand as a lasting testament to the nuances of tennis technique and the skill of the players.... and hopefully provide readers with more technical tennis know-how than they will ever need.

Cliches, platitudes and committee-speak be gone.
Job done!
